Building great relationships with our neighbors not only makes our community a better place to live and visit but helps ensure the future operation of San Diego short-term rentals. Being proactive and introducing yourself, as well as giving your neighbors your contact information, can help mitigate any potential issues should they arise. Below is a list of good neighbor practices you can implement, including neighbor notification letter templates.

Why neighbor notification helps build positive relationships

Letting your neighbors know about your short-term rental from the get-go is always best. Providing them with your contact information and letting them know what measures you are taking to ensure your guests will be good neighbors themselves will help put them at ease. Whether you’re meeting with your neighbors in person, giving them a call, or sending a letter, giving them the following information is a good idea:

  • Your contact information
  • Emergency contact information (if different from above)
  • Your permit number
  • An overview of your guest communication process, including how guests receive house rules
  • An overview of your trash, noise, and parking plans

A little hospitality goes a long way

Invite your neighbors over to your property for a walk-through or backyard barbecue. Letting them see your home and how you are maintaining it (inside and out) shows your pride in your community. Getting to know your neighbors in an informal setting can be beneficial in the long run and will allow for better dialogue and communication. Should there be an issue in the future, you want your neighbors to feel comfortable to come to you directly rather than filing a complaint with the City. They will have the number from your posted license as well, but you would rather them contact you so it can be addressed.

Offer your home to neighbors when they need extra room to visit family and friends or even themselves if they are having renovations. This is a great way to build trust and show hospitality. Plus, they will be able to see firsthand the top-notch hosting you are providing to make sure you have the best guests.
